I would not have thought writing was capable of being an addiction until I created this, my fifth blog. It was not a deliberated decision: it was simply an urge to “re-express” myself. Like a bored drug user seeking new highs, my current writing-boards just didn’t seem to be adequate avenues for self-expression anymore.

There’s a clue to this mindset in the preface of my latest book: Everything in Nigeria is Going To Kill You where I wrote:

“I have survived so far as a Nigerian, and so have a hundred million others. And so the social concerns voiced in this book do not indicate a personal desire to proffer solutions to social problems; instead, they are expressions of the coping mechanisms which seem to be built into the psyche of the average Nigerian. Some of us complain, some of us protest, some of us go spiritual and still many others go material, and also a few of us turn to the arts for solace—we write, not to cure other people of madness, but to avoid going mad ourselves.”

In short, Nigeria can fucking drive you nuts. Just find a way to channel the nuts somewhere reasonable.
